Novels for Young Adults

The Dark Balance
A supernatural thriller for young adults: As a child Koby Recker picks up a unique toy called the "Monster in the Box" in a Southwest souvenir shop. But when she opens the box, she unleashes handsome nineteen-year-old Mick—who also happens to be Death. Ten years later, as Koby fights a growing attraction to Mick, she must choose either to put the monster back—or to help Death do his job, and so fulfill her destiny.

Koby got out of the car, looking at the vultures circling above the small ravine. They reminded her of the gulls when she was seven, and of another trip to Nevada. And the box.

Dead Quiet
A noir thriller for young adults set in 1949 California: Eighteen-year-old Nick Zarnecki is already on the run when he has a fateful encounter with a desperate older woman. After then fleeing the scene of a suicide, Nick must prove his innocence—or be mistakenly charged with two murders and lose the love and respect of the one girl who can save his neck.

Excerpt from Dead Quiet

I didn’t just fall off the back of the turnip truck. It was artichokes. And I jumped. I had twenty-five cents in my pocket and voices in my head. I was on the run, thumbing, riding, and mostly walking since Shytown, and I guess you could say I was scraping by all right. The voices didn’t let me sleep much, though. All that yelling.
